Two judges from South West in Bloom toured Exmouth on Friday July 15. Martin Abraham from Torquay and Paul Collier from Exeter were shown round Manor Gardens, Plantation Walk, Pavilion Gardens, and the Beach Gardens by Mike Vine, EDDC’s Asst Parks Development Officer. Tim Dafforn, Countryside Team Leader, explained the biodiversity of the Maer nature reserve. Members of Devon Wildlife Trust demonstrated how their allotment attracts wildlife, then the judges visited Marpool School, where the children stole the show. Well, they did provide rain forest smoothies and chocolate & courgette cake! Committee member Graham Bell showed them the new fish bed etc at the end of Marine Way, after which they walked through the town centre. Phear Park, Bapton Lane park, and the Quay completed the tour.
The judges assessed six It’s Your Neighbourhood community gardening schemes at Bicton Street, Camperdown Terrace, the Quay, Rolle corner, The Hollows and Brixington Parade. Refreshments by Gerry Bassett at Sun Lodge enabled the judges to meet a cross-section of people connected with Exmouth in Bloom – from the Council, Streetscene, Neighbourhoods, sponsors, supporters, helpers, Friends, local competition judges and winners. The results will be revealed at Taunton County Cricket Ground on October 6 – we are hoping for gold again. In the meantime we’ll just enjoy the summer in Exmouth.
