We were privileged to be involved with the planting of a new forest in Phear Park today. East Devon’s Green Spaces officer Russel Giblett and Horticultural Advisor Paul Fealy welcomed 23 children from the local Withycombe Raleigh Primary school to help plant nearly 300 tree saplings. Bloom volunteer helpers joined others from Exmouth Tree Project , Rotary, Wild Exmouth and Exmouth Town Council.
Russell explained the importance of trees in fighting Climate Change and pointed out some ancient trees which would need replacing in the childrens’ lifetimes. Paul demonstrated how the trees were to be planted with the biodegradable tree guards wrapped around to give protection from rabbits and dogs.
The children were fantastic and had the job done in an hour and a half, leaving Russell and Paul to add the final mulch matting to the trees after lunch.
There will be another forest planting on Imperial Rec on Friday 24th at 1.20pm if anyone is interested.
What a wonderful project
